The dragon
of Littlebury
Everyone knows about
the Dragon of
Brno hanging in
the old town hall and
some people had
even heard the
legend about it.
Have you ever
thought about how
it could have
turned out differently?
Once upon a time there was a city
called Littlebury. It wasn’t too big, but neither was it small. In the city you could find
everything you needed.
There were hospitals,
schools, cafés, theatres
etc. The citizens were little people
(that’s how the
name came to
existence) and every
one of them
was always smiling, being friendly and kind
to others. They led happy peaceful
lives, living in their
nice houses, having all
they could wish for.
The major was a little plump man called
Jimmy Bump. He lived near
the town hall in
a very posh, but
at the same time
modest house with a red roof.
He had a little plump wife
Manda and their
tiny plump daughter was named Cindy.
Cindy was a sickly child and both of her parents lived in fear of what could happen were she let outside to play with other children. Therefore Cindy spent most of the time in her room playing with figures of dinosaurs which she deeply admired.

One morning
Jimmy was woken
by some clamour
and shouts. He
quickly got out
of his bed
and looked across
the town from
his balcony. Since
they lived on
a little peak
he could see
over the whole
city. He easily found
the source of
the tumult. On
the east side
of the city
square was a
big gathering. Jimmy
dressed up as
fast as he
could and kissing
his wife goodbye
flew out the
door to see
what the fuss
was about.
Since the square wasn’t far he got there in a blink of an eye. As he started forcing his way through the crowd, he heard muttering all around him. Something unusual was happening. It took him a while to push through all the people but then he could finally see why everyone was so upset.

With its
back to the
wall sitting on
its haunches was a huge
green lizard-like thing.
Some kind of
animal perhaps. No
one dared to
get closer to
the giant and
Mr Bump felt
sudden responsibility to
sort this bizarre
situation out.
“Ehm, ehm...” the major cleared his throat, “Sir? Hello? Can I help you?” He jumped back a little as the it turned its enormous head around to look at him. Mr Bump almost instantly regretted speaking up. The creature’s snout was also green, scaly and very long with little yellow eyes at the top and colossal white teeth jutting out of its maw even when closed. A tremor ran through the little man. On the other hand there was something quite human-like in its eyes although they looked vicious on the first sight.
“Umm... Hello... Could I talk with the major of this town?” asked the lizard nervously. A wave of amazement swept through the group. “Did you hear
it?” “It spoke!” “ It can talk?!” and similar sentences and whispers could be heard all around.
Mr Bump gathered all his courage and spoke up once more: “I... I am t-the m-major! Who are you? And what could you possibly want from us?”
The thing bent down to be eye to eye with the major. Eventually it decided to completely lay down since it would be too exhausting to keep its head so low.
“I am very pleased to meet you,” the creature said. “I happen to be a reptile. A crocodile to be exact. My name is Bruno. And I seek only one simple thing. Home.”

Another wave
ran through the
crowd. This time
mostly “Ohh” and
“Ahh” as the
good people of
Littlebury were touched
by the crocodile’s
speech. But the
major was suspicious
of the creature’s
intentions.
“How did you chance upon our Littlebury? Why this city?” asked the major.
“Oh, well...” the huge reptile sighed sadly. “I bumped into your city by an accident. I was brought into this country as a gift for a ruler, but all that awaited me at the court was being hung on the wall, so I ran away as soon as I had an opportunity. Your city was the first one I found big enough to hide or maybe even stay in.”
The reptile was clearly geting the crowd’s sympathy.
Mr Bump heard a lot of whispers like “please, let him stay” and “we’ll take care of him”, echoing in the group of gatherers, but it was against his mind to do so. All he could think about was his little daughter fascinated by dinosaurs and such things and how she could get sick or eaten by this monster if she ever got too close. He couldn’t go against his own people, though...

“Alright! Alright! Silence!” the
major shouted. “I’m
going to suggest
keeping Mr Bruno
in Littlebury on
today’s council, if
you want me
to do it.”
The crowd cheered happily. “Until then,” he continued, “Bruno will be accommodated in one of the empty barns outside the city. He will be asked to find his own food in the woods or ponds around Littlebury and he will be restricted from eating our stock. Does everyone agree?”
The citizens nodded their heads in agreement and even Bruno did. He was glad they accepted him.

Mr Bump
had no intention
of negotiating any
better circumstances for
the poor crocodile.
He liked the
way things were
and was strictly against
changing the peaceful
air of his
beloved city. On
top of that
he didn’t trust
the strange creature
and expected it to go
rogue as soon
as they start
liking it. He
also had to
make sure Cindy
wasn’t going to
go running to
it and catch
something nasty.
Meanwhile the
news about Bruno
spread through Littlebury
like a wildfire.
Before Jimmy got
home from the
square Cindy was
already bouncing around
the house with
excitement. Manda knew her
husband would be
very angry if
he found out
about the source
of Cindy’s thrill,
so the two
of them decided
to keep it in
secrecy.
Mrs Bump was very calm woman and didn’t like arguing especially with Mr Bump, though she secretly disagreed with the amount of effort he was putting into keeping Cindy ‘safe’. Not that she didn’t care, quite the opposite! Every now and then she would let her little daughter out on the garden to play while she sat down with a book and watched her from the corner of the eye. It was their ‘girl’s secret’.

Two years
passed since the
monster came. As
the time went by a
lot of people
forgot about Bruno
living on the
outskirts of the
city. The major
was glad they
did so and
that none wanted
to discuss it.
Everything went fine.
The city was
thriving and Cindy’s
health got so
much better. It
looked like the
time she was
spending in her
room was finally
doing her good.
Until one
day he went
to kiss her
goodnight after a long meeting
at the town
hall and her
bed was empty.
Manda fell asleep
in her armchair
while reading a
book and he
didn’t want to
wake her, so
he decided to
look for her
himself. But Cindy
was nowhere to
be found! Except
Manda the house
was empty as
was the garden.
Jimmy couldn’t think
of any place
she could be...
With horror
he recalled how
she played with
dinosaurs all the
time. Dread washed
over him when
he remembered that
shortly after the
crocodile appeared she
seemingly lost her
passion for them.
It all clicked
together. He jumped
into his small
red car and
raced towards the
barn where Bruno
lived.
Although he predicted it he wasn’t ready for the shock when he heard Cindy’s laugh from inside the building. With great effort he pushed the door open and saw his little daughter jumping up and down the monster’s belly while both of them were chuckling.
“Cindy!” he shouted.
Startled she looked his way. Her stomach dropped right through the floor the moment she recognised him in the dark. “What am I going to do?!” she thought frantically. She jumped down from Bruno’s belly onto the packs of hay and walked to the major.
He was furious. As soon as she was within reach he grabbed her by the arm and dragged her to the car. None of them spoke a word during the way home but Cindy knew she was probably never going to leave her room again.

Later Manda
took on herself
letting Cindy out
rather than having
her break down
under the force
of her father’s
fury and most
of all, disappointment. Every
evening Mr Bump
himself locked Cindy’s
windows and door
and every morning
he was there
to unlock them.
He thought about
banishing the creature
from the city
and surrounding grounds
but then he
let it go
and didn’t bother
himself with it.
Another month
passed and as
much as Littlebury
thrived, Cindy got
worse and worse.
She stopped going
to school and
eventually she was
too weak to
get up from
her bed. Obviously
both of her
parents were very
worried but none
including doctors could
tell what was
wrong.
One day
Manda suggested that
maybe Cindy could
get better, if
she found some
friends. Jimmy eagerly
agreed but when
his wife indicated
she meant the
lizard, he got
angry all over
again and didn’t talk
with her for
several days. Meanwhile
Cindy’s condition worsened
every day.
Manda wasn’t one to give up easily. “Jimmy,” she said after he calmed down. “Do you remember when two years ago the crocodile came?”
“Huh,” murmured Jimmy.
“Well, we found out almost instantly, you know? Both I and Cindy. She was so excited about it! Meeting Bruno was the first thing she wanted to do and I thought it would be good for her, so I didn’t stop her. They became such a good friends. She would talk about him all the time you weren’t home. And think of how her health got better after that! I think it’s worth trying once more,” Manda said.
After a long pause Jimmy said: “Okay then,” and headed for the stairs.
“It should be done as quickly as possible,” Manda added.
“Sure,” Jimmy called over his shoulder. His wife caught up with him and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt.
“You were the one who caused this whole unfortunate situation, so you’ll have to be the one to fix it!” she said raising her voice. It must have worked because without complaints Jimmy got into his car and drove off in the direction of the barn.

Nobody really
knows what happened
at the barn,
but supposedly Jimmy
humbly apologised and
asked Bruno if
he could come
and keep Cindy
company, to which
he gladly agreed.
He moved in
for a while
with the Bumps
to watch over
his best friend.
Surprisingly (or not?)
Cindy started getting
better and in
few weeks she
fully recovered.
Jimmy threw
away his mistrust
and announced he
was going to
build a great
house for Bruno,
to which the
crocodile responded he
actually likes the
barn and would
only need to
make few improvements
to make it
cosy. Bruno became
a favourite part
of all traditional
gatherings and truly
earned his place
in hearts of
all citizens of
Littlebury. Also every
single one of
them agreed it
would be such
a shame if
Bruno ended up
hanging somewhere from
the ceiling. And
if they hadn’t
died, they’re still
living there up
to this day.
